About Ruth Fellowes

If you’re here, chances are you’ve been struggling to support your kid's mood and behaviour for a while.

A boy mum of 4, specialising in clinical Nutrition for 18 years with a background in Neurodevelopmental Therapy, I have plenty of clinical experience and neat tips to help your child settle and show their real self.

Ruth Fellowes is a Certified Practicing Nutritionist (CPN) and Western herbalist based in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, specialising in nutritional and herbal support for children with ADHD. She works with families right across Australia through Telehealth.

Where it all started

It started with my first child... he was cute and adorable (not biased at all) but it was a rough start with us both. Firstly there was terrible colic for 5-6 months which didn't settle until I used a herbal remedy.

As a toddler he seemed more sensitive to life’s ordinary stresses than other children his age. We even cut a family holiday short because he simply would not sleep at night and we were all exhausted. I didn’t know what I was doing wrong.

Then I picked up a copy of Sue Dengate’s Fed Up (which I highly recommend  reading!) and worked through the questionnaire in the book. I was stunned. My boy ticked off item after item, indicating that that he might be reacting to natural and artificial food chemicals rather than struggling with something that 'was just him'.  I followed the elimination and challenge process outlined and found out that food truly does change a child’s mood, sleep, and behaviour.

This is why I'm here: to show you that food, mood & behaviour are ALL connected.

Once we identified his triggers and removed them, everything shifted. The night terrors stopped. Toilet training suddenly happened and he became a happier, calmer child. Even better, he stayed that way and thrived throughout school and into his career.

Seeing how food literally changes mood and behaviour, and even with 4 young boys now in the family I studied formal qualifications in clinical nutrition and herbal medicine. It was clear to me that what we ingest, matters, and I wanted to understand the science behind this, and to teach other parents what I learnt.

Over 18 years, it is honestly the children who have taught me the most about what works and what doesn’t; what can be changed quickly, and what takes time; and what is simply too hard to ask of a family already running on empty. That knowledge didn't come from textbooks but from sitting with hundreds of families and paying close attention.

What Makes This Approach Different

The focus is on working with your child's unique biochemistry and addressing the internal roadblocks!

Listening to what YOUR child needs

Your child comes packaged with unique biochemical and metabolic needs. Unpacking where the 'handbrakes' are on within their internal systems and pathways will make it easier for your child's normal developmental growth to continue.

Based in science, guided by the realities of life

I've been working in the field of nutrition and paediatrics for 18 + years and that' s not even including the time and experience from working with own kids and understanding how significant a role that food plays in optimal brain function. Being a boy mum of 4 I like to keep things straightforward and simple.

Practical and sustainable

You will be making changes based on testing and on nutritional (and sometimes herbal) science. Because the focus is on leading the body to function more efficiently, and you gain a greater appreciation for how food impacts mood, learning, focus and behaviour, you will gain the tools you need to support your child for years to come. l Be

Collaborative & understanding

Research on nutrients (and herbs) is extensive. But how to apply all that to your child? That's where I come in to make science and practicalities merge.

What You Can Expect:

My work is squarely focused on children’s emotional and behavioural regulation, particularly ADHD across all ages. The challenges I most commonly support include-

  • ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) in children of all ages

  • Big emotions, meltdowns, and difficulty calming down

  • Impulsive and defiant behaviour

  • Sleep difficulties- trouble falling asleep, night waking, night terrors

  • Poor concentration and learning difficulties

  • Gut health problems that affect mood and behaviour (the gut-brain connection)

  • Nutrient deficiencies and mineral imbalance driving ADHD symptoms

  • Sensitivity to food chemicals and additives (using the RPAH Elimination and Challenge approach)

  • Toxic element exposure and the effect on brain function

  • Genetic variants affecting how your child absorbs nutrients and produces neurotransmitters

  • Nutritional support for healthy brain development in the early years

  • Fussy eating in kids with ADHD

How Ruth Fellowes works

My approach is built on a single principle: every child’s biochemistry is unique. A generic ADHD protocol will always fall short, because it does not account for what is actually happening inside your child’s body.

What works for someone else’s child - the supplements recommended in a Facebook group, the protocol your friend swears by - may do nothing for yours, because the underlying driver is different.

I use a layered framework of functional testing to look for the root causes of dysregulation in your individual child. From those results, I build a personalised plan to include specific supplements and dietary changes matched to your child’s genetic profile, along with achievable lifestyle shifts and all explained in plain language you can act on straight away.

We often start with targeted supplementation, because it tends to produce the clearest early signs of change and helps build your confidence. From there, I teach you the dietary and nutritional principles that will serve your child for life, so you become the authority in your own home on what your child’s body and brain need.

For some families, food chemicals and additives turn out to be a major driver. In those cases I use the RPAH elimination approach to help identify the specific triggers behind your child’s symptoms.
